How do IoT devices work?
IoT devices have
sensors and mini-computer processors that act on the data collected by the
sensors through machine learning. Essentially, IoT devices are mini-computers,
connected to the Internet, and vulnerable to malware and hacking.
Machine learning
occurs when computers learn like humans - by collecting data from their
environment - and this is what makes IoT devices smarter. This data can help
the machine learn your choice and adjust itself accordingly. Machine learning
is a type of artificial intelligence that helps computers learn without being
programmed by anyone.
This does not
mean that your smart speaker will discuss the key points of the previous
night's big game with you. But your connected refrigerator can send you an
alert on your smartphone that you are short of eggs and milk because it knows
that you are near a supermarket.
What are some examples of IoT devices, and how they work?
Although the name
"Internet of Things" may be unfamiliar, you may better identify this
connected ecosystem as a "smart home" or "connected home",
which includes various IoT devices that make your home life easier. But IoT
devices are also found outside the home. They can range from a Wi-Fi pet camera
on your bookshelf to a medical device implanted in your body, such as a
pacemaker. As long as the device is capable of connecting to the Internet and
has sensors that transmit data, it can be considered an IoT device. Although
your smartphone can do both, it is not an IoT device.
However,
smartphones play a big role in IoT, as many IoT devices can be controlled via
an app on a smartphone. You can use your smartphone to communicate with your
smart thermostat, for example, to provide the right temperature for you by the
time you get home from work. One more plus? This can eliminate unnecessary
heating or cooling while you are away, potentially saving you money on energy
costs.
What are the benefits of IoT?
The Internet of
Things is designed to make our lives more convenient. Here are a few examples:
• Smart bathroom
scales work in tandem with your treadmill, providing ideas for preparing food
on your laptop or smartphone, so that you stay healthy.
• Security
devices monitoring your home turn the lights on and off as you enter and exit
your room, and streaming video so you can check in while away.
• Smart voice
assistants place your normal takeout orders on command, making it easy to get
fresh food delivered to your door.

ReplyDeleteAn IoT system is made up of wireless remote temperature sensors that communicates with the cloud via some form of connectivity. Once the data reaches the cloud, software processes it and may decide to take action, such as sending an alert or automatically adjusting the sensors without the user's intervention.
