IOT IN SELF-DRIVING CARS

IoT technologies can greatly improve the capabilities of a self-driving vehicle in better understanding its environment, additionally to pre-existing sensors (cameras, radar, LIDAR, etc.). These were among the results of Autopilot, a large-scale pilot program that forms the idea for a replacement generation of mobility services involving self-driving vehicles.

The results were revealed during his last show "A Glance at the Future: IoT for Autonomous Driving" at Versailles.

"Autopilot's results have confirmed that IoT plays a crucial role in developing a replacement generation of mobility services and, more broadly, in understanding mobility as a service. This project relates to connected and automatic cross-border corridors the etc. Commission is contributing to the deployment of the strategy, with the aim of reducing zero fatal road accidents by 2050.

IoT in commission of "augmented" mobility

IoT can connect all kinds of devices to the web to share information and use the added value. Autonomous vehicles are thus connected on-board sensors, also as pedestrians and cyclists' smart phones, traffic sensors, parking detectors, etc. to share information. Cloud computing services use and mix of these information to reinforce and supply additional data. -Price services for self-driving vehicles.

IoT for better anticipation of driving environment

Information from the IoT obtained by a self-driving vehicle enhances the detection by its sensors, which enables it to raised estimate imminent events and risks present in its environment. Highlights of the AUTOPILOT project results:

• Improved road safety of auto passengers and users by detecting pedestrians or cyclists and obstacles (speed bumps, puddles, pits, etc.);

• Improved traffic liquidity: vehicle reception of customized routes to avoid congested areas or to seek out more readily available parking space;

• Improving driving comfort: optimizing speed for smooth navigation and maneuver (without sudden brakes);

• Reduction in power and fuel consumption through optimization of travel, especially in traffic jams or by reducing the time it takes to look for an area

Towards a replacement business model for autonomous valet-parking and car-sharing services

Autopilot has also enabled the identification of business opportunities which will be adopted on an outsized scale within the various European cities participating within the project. Business models are developed - supported accurate performance indicators - for 2 sorts of services: autonomous valet parking service and car sharing.

AUTOPILOT will enable the event of a roadmap per service operating stage, to work out the amount of commercialization of the technology and therefore the regulatory framework required for its development, to know new markets, and more.
